| Ex-Rangers pitcher Garcia dies in car accident | |
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CARACAS, Venezuela — Former Texas Rangers pitcher Rosman Garcia died after a car accident early Thursday in his native Venezuela. He was 32. Garcia played for the Rangers in 2003. He had been playing recently for a Venezuelan team, the Aragua Tigers. Team spokesman Manuel Rodriguez said in a Twitter message Garcia was killed when he was driving home early Thursday after a game. He said Garcia’s car skidded off the road and hit a tree. During his career with the Rangers in 2003, Garcia pitched 46 games and had a 6.02 ERA. He returned to Texas the following season but was sent back to the minor leagues after four games. | Texas Rangers’ Catcher Yorvit Torrealba Should Not…
I wrote an article a couple of days ago about Texas Rangers’ catcher Yorvit Torrealba hitting an umpire in the Venezuelan Winter League. At the time, I questioned whether or not Torrealba would be suspended by the Rangers or Major League Baseball and who they might find to replace him. Yorvit Torrealba, Texas Rangers It looks like that won’t be a concern. Torrealba issued an apology for the incident, in which the Venezuelan Winter League suspended him for 66 games, meaning he won’t play again this season or next. “I wanted to express my sincere apologies to all parties for my actions during the Venezuelan Winter League game on Friday,” Torrealba said. “I have extended an apology to the Rangers organization as well. I am embarrassed for my conduct, and personally relayed that feeling to the umpire after that night’s game. On the field, I strive to be an example for children, especially those in my native Venezuela, and I regret my actions. I understand the reactions to the incident and will make every effort to set a positive example in the future.” The big thing to take note of here is that the Texas Rangers contacted Torrealba and noted that they will probably not take any further disciplinary action. The Venezuelan Winter League made an example of the catcher, as they should have, but is there any reason he should face more punishment in the MLB? I don’t think there should be. The one area you have to look at is how his actions paint Major League Baseball. In the NFL, Roger Goodell has made a career on suspending people for things that had nothing to do with the sport. He has suspended players for personal conduct problems, in one case suspended Ben Roethlisberger for a sexual assault complaint that no charges were filed for. Goodell is someone who will punish anyone he wants, guilty or not. However, in the MLB, it does not look like Torrealba will get suspended. It looks like his punishment will be with the Venezuelan Winter League and nowhere else, which is the way it should be. The commissioners of sports leagues are not the morality police and should stick to penalties in their own leagues. However, one thing the Texas Rangers organization need to do is sit down with Torrealba and discuss the incident with him. If this happens in the MLB, during a game, he will find himself suspended, no doubt. They need to figure out what happened and make him ensure this will not happen again. If it does, it will be time for Texas to find a new reserve catcher. Author Shawn S. | Flashlight beating prompts deputy’s arrest
TYLER, TX (KLTV) – New information is surfacing about the arrest and termination last week of a Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Deputy. According to an arrest warrant issued by the Texas Rangers, Michael D. Crumpler is charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon by a public servant. According to officials, Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Deputy Crumpler and another officer responded to a 9-1-1 call on November 28 at the home of a sixteen-year old male. “At some point in their contact with the juvenile, the investigator allegedly struck the juvenile in the back of the head, which caused an injury to the juvenile that was requiring medical attention,” said Trooper Jean Dark with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Crumpler allegedly used his flashlight and hit the juvenile in the head. “After the call, I had contact with Officer Crumpler, and he said there was some force used, and I said, “Fill out a use of force form.” That was the first red flag that wasn’t done,” said Van Zandt County Sheriff Pat Burnett. “The next day, it was brought to my attention that excessive force was used. I then viewed the video. I immediately suspended the officer.” Sheriff Burnett called in the Texas Rangers to investigate the incident. “The ranger conducted the investigation, contacted us about what his outcome was, and at that point of time we contacted Officer Crumpler and fired him, or terminated his employment with the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s office,” Burnett said. Crumpler was arrested and released on $10,000 bond on December 21. Burnett says he called in the Texas Rangers so the investigation would remain impartial. “The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s office, as long as I am behind this desk, as long as I am the head of this agency, will be transparent. You can’t have a sheriff’s office that you have questions about and expect them to serve you,” Burnett said. The Van Zandt County District Attorney will now review the Texas Rangers investigation to determine whether the case will go to a grand jury. Copyright 2011 KLTV. All rights reserved.
