Baseball star Yu Darvish visits Texas Rangers

Yu Darvish dropped in on the Texas Rangers, but club officials declined to offer details on the Japanese star pitcher’s get-acquainted trip.

MLB.com reported that Darvish made the trip to the Dallas area with his father in order to see the team’s facilities and meet personnel, including club president Nolan Ryan and manager Ron Washington.

The Rangers, the two-time defending American League champions, bid more than $51 million last month for the right to negotiate with Darvish, who went 18-6 last season for the Hokkaido-based Nippon Ham Fighters with a 1.44 earned-run average and 276 strikeouts in 232 innings.

Darvish, who pitched for Japan in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2009 World Baseball Classic, has kept an earned-run average under 2.00 for the past five seasons in Japan. He has been the strikeout king three times and twice been named the Pacific League’s Most Valuable Player.

At 6-foot-5 (196 cm) and 216 pounds (98 kg), his size and skill figures to be baffling for US batters.

The Rangers’ bid gave them until January 18 to sign him to a deal bringing him to Major League Baseball. If they can’t, he’ll return to the Fighters.

Torrealba was expelled from a game on Friday after the incident. He argued with the home-plate umpire after striking out, then angrily put a hand to the umpire’s mask and shoved him.

League president Jose Grasso Vecchio called Torrealba’s behavior unacceptable, saying it violated the league’s rules.

Torrealba plays for the Caracas Lions when not playing in Major League Baseball. His agent, Melvin Roman, said Torrealba acknowledges that he got carried away in the heat of the moment.

Published: Nov. 29, 2011 at 7:38 PM

ARLINGTON, Texas, Nov. 29 (UPI) — The Texas Rangers said Tuesday they have hired former major league pitching great Greg Maddux as a special assistant to the general manager.

The American League champion Rangers hired Maddux away from the Chicago Cubs, where he had held a similar position for two years under since-fired GM Jim Hendry.

Maddux, 45, a four-time Cy Young Award winner, will be reunited with his brother Mike in Texas, where the latter is the pitching coach under Manager Ron Washington.

“We’re excited to add Greg to our group and look forward to him contributing to the development of our young pitchers,” Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels said.

Greg Maddux will be an instructor for both the minor and major league staffs during spring training. He will also work with the Rangers’ farm clubs during the regular season, Daniels indicated.
